Back in May 2022, the Met Gala took place where we saw a dozen celebrities wearing either vintage or re-worn items from previous events. But who are the celebrities supporting sustainable fashion off the red carpet?

EMMA WATSON

Let's start with Harry Potter star, Emma Watson who has continuously been involved in campaigning for climate change, social issues and become an advocate for sustainable fashion. In an interview supporting Good On You, Emma shares how "on the red carpet we’re often asked not what we are wearing but ‘who’. It’s as if the ideas behind the clothes – the label, the designer, the collection – have more meaning than the garment itself. But there’s something missing."

With collaborations with People Tree and leaderships on Vogue Australia's first sustainability issue, Watson has invested time into promoting sustainable fashion and help communicate the message of a demand for change in the industry.

BILLIE EILISH

During this year's Met Gala, Billie Eilish took the red carpet wearing an upcycled Gucci gown sharing how “We didn’t have to waste a bunch of stuff. It all already existed. I just wanted to be as eco-friendly as possible.” Debuting a climate event called Overheated, Billie is taking part in the collaboration of climate activists, musicians and designers to discuss the current situation of the climate crisis. During this, she aims to educate her fans on sustainable practices. Overheated kicked off on Friday 11th June, with a few dates up until today, Sunday 26th June.

WILL.I.AM

Pitching his idea back in 2009 , Will.i.am shared his plan on creating a new system to the Sustainability Officer at Coca Cola, stating that "it's about sustainability and the recovery of post-consumer plastics and aluminium, and turning it into other things." The company in question is called Ekocycle, specialising in plastic recycling.

One of the first fashion garment made using this idea was a pair of Levi jeans, shown in the image below.

Since Ekocycle began, the recycling plastic system has resulted in the generation of products such as Adidas Jackets, partnerships with Harrods and crafted custom hats with Goorin Bros. With technological advances in the fashion industry, Ekocycle introduced a collection that includes a 3D printer, generating fibre filaments using recycled plastic bottles.

MILEY CYRUS

We all know Instagram is a place for people to be influenced from all things fashion, food and travel ideas. With millions of followers, Miley Cyrus shared to her fans the second-hand looks she found at a vintage store. In the Instagram post back in 2019, she captioned “Tom Ford but make it thrifty (previously loved/owned clothes = most sustainable fashion source),” whilst wearing a black leather jacket with fringe along the sleeves.

Instagram users are heavily influenced by their followers, such as buying into what they are wearing, to new trends in hairstyles. With the demand for a better fashion industry and need for the spread of information in relation to sustainability, celebrity figures communicating this to their millions of followers is an advantageous step towards spreading the awareness.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS

Pharrell is the creative director of the brand Bionic Yarn, which spins plastic waste into new products within the textiles market.

In an interview with Refinery 29 back in 2014, Williams shared his ideas on project and discussed how “instead of using virgin polyester, which is a form of plastic, we just use recycled plastic that’s been around the block a few times, ya know what I mean? It’s much better.”

In a world filled with Shein hauls and fast fashion exploitation, follow people who wish to make a difference in the fashion industry. The future of fashion is changing, and it would be great to bring you along on the journey.
