Want to make changes in your fashion habits this year? This post shares five resolutions you can try out as we head into a new year.
1. HAVE A WARDROBE CLEAR OUT
The start of a new year is the perfect time to have a wardrobe clear out. In the words of Marie Kondo, "discard anything that doesn't spark joy". In this case, to avoid your items ending in landfill, discard your clothes by donating to friends and family, a charity or selling online.
If there is an item of clothing you wouldn't necessarily wear anymore but aren't willing to part ways, check out tip number 5 which discusses the option of up-cycling your old clothing items, and making it into something original just for you.
2. KEEP AN ORGANISED WARDROBE
After clearing out your wardrobe, ensuring you keep it organised will help you keep track of staple items and give you an idea of what items you do or don't need in future. This will also make it easier for you to find an outfit daily, as all your options will be displayed clearly for you. Another tip would be to display colour hanging items in colour order, helping you find that perfect jacket in the colour you feel like wearing today!
3. AVOID BUYING NEW / FAST FASHION
To limit the amount of clothing in your wardrobe, try avoid buying any new garments for 3 months. If you are wanting to find a new item, try shopping second-hand or thrifting as an alternative, giving an old item a new life. This may be a challenge if you are a regular buyer of new clothes, but giving yourself this task will help you appreciate the clothes you already have and let yourself experiment with styling using the range of clothes you already own.
4. SHOP SMALL BUSINESSES / YOUNG DESIGNERS
We've all heard the talk on how we should all be shopping small businesses more, so why not carry that into 2022? Behind every small business is someone who started their brand through a passion of interest in that area. One small purchase will put a smile on their face and they will appreciate this much more that the owners of large businesses with sales every second.
Many of the small fashion businesses produce hand-made and made-to-order garments, reducing the amount of waste made during construction. With this, you can have the opportunity to note exact size and dimensions to the brand designer, who will construct to fit your body. Say goodbye to the surprise of poorly sized clothing from your online order and say hello to a garment that fits specially for you!
5. UPCYCLING YOUR CLOTHES
Seeking a new hobby this year? Why not upcycle your new clothes and give them a new look! There are many ways you can do this. It could be you want more detail elements to a jacket? Hand embroidery would be a great way to add both colour and detail to your item of clothing, embroidering anything you love!
I hope you follow one or more of these tips this year! And remember, wear the clothes YOU want to wear!
